Dear Maine Conservation Voter,
As a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger, West Africa, I learned firsthand about the global impacts of climate change and the benefits of service.
This legislative session, we have an opportunity to establish a Climate Corps right here in Maine to help provide the human resources needed to increase the scope and scale of our climate change response.
Establishing a state Climate Corps is a recommendation in Maine's Climate Action Plan, Maine Won't Wait , and will help harness the power of service to support Maine communities both curb and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Volunteer Maine, where I sit as a state commissioner representing the environmental sector, was tasked with developing a Climate Corps plan. The commission partnered with about one hundred stakeholders to form a comprehensive and ambitious plan that is specific to our state. The final plan was reported to the Environment and Natural Resources committee of the legislature on January 31st. Read the full report here [[link removed]] .

Establishing a Maine Climate Corps program does require state funding. Yet, the cost of doing nothing is far greater for Maine's people and environment— and for marginalized communities around the world.
