Team, After winning control of several critical state legislatures in 2020, Republicans gained the power to draw congressional districts however they saw fit – and an opportunity to give their party control of Congress for the next decade. Unsurprisingly, the GOP has taken full advantage of this opportunity. But even courts in some of the more conservative parts of this country have ruled that Republican efforts at diluting Democratic power are too egregious, even by their standards. This year, courts in North Carolina and Ohio both ruled that congressional maps needed to be redrawn, dealing a blow to hyper-gerrymandering efforts by the GOP.
Republicans draw these maps with surgical precision, and it's clear who their target is. In their attempt to hold Congress for the next decade, they strip away power from voters either by packing Democrats in one district or distributing Democratic votes across several Republican majority districts, and therefore diluting Democratic voting power.
