John,

Remember former Georgia Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, who used insider knowledge of the COVID-19 pandemic to cash in big time on the stock market?

Well, recently, there has been momentum in Congress to ban stock trading by lawmakers. Last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi jumped on board by directing a House committee to start drafting rules that will guide the ban.

Now, I support the Speaker’s action – but I also believe that banning stock trading should go beyond Congress, and also include other very powerful public servants with expansive access to inside information: the judiciary.

Ensuring our judges are following a code of ethics is something I am a firm believer of – particularly Supreme Court justices. That’s why I’ve introduced a slate of legislation that creates a code of ethics for the Supreme Court, makes the federal court system more transparent and accountable to the American people, and will introduce a bill that will prevent judges from trading stocks in companies that do business in their courtroom.

Thank you,

Hank Johnson (he/him)
