Starbucks employees in Tallahassee are making headlines by organizing the first unionized Starbucks in the state of Florida and others are following in its path, including in Hialeah.

I want to be clear: I stand with Starbucks employees. And I could not be more supportive of their mission. I hope you’ll share this message and stand with me in solidarity →

When I first arrived in the United States, I waited tables to pay for my education. I know what it is to work in the foodservice industry because I have worked in it myself.

And I can tell you, these are not unskilled workers.

Many Starbucks employees – and service industry professionals in general – balance these difficult jobs with raising a family, earning a degree, and too often, additional jobs.

Having the ability to unionize and bargain with employers gives these Floridians – just like me, not too long ago – a chance to grow financially and the freedom to pursue the American Dream.
