Plaskett for Congress

Friends,

Living in the Virgin Islands, I’ve seen climate change happen before my very eyes.

Hurricane season became longer. Hurricanes became stronger. In 2017, we had two back-to-back category 5 record-breaking storms that absolutely devastated the Caribbean and my home.

And so, when writing legislation with the support of my Democratic colleagues, I made sure that we included funding for the Virgin Islands that helped rebuild our infrastructure, while also making sure it withstood future natural disasters.

As a result, the Virgin Islands is set to receive nearly $100 million in new funding for flood control projects, and over $200 million for the rebuilding of the Arthur A. Richards Junior High School that was destroyed by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Folks, climate change is here, and I am grateful we have a Democratic majority in Washington who understands the urgency of the matter – but we are in danger of losing that majority. With the midterm election inching closer, we need to make sure that in January 2023, climate change remains a priority. Will you chip in today to defend our majority and keep climate change top of mind?

When Democrats took control of Congress, I knew we had the chance to put together the building blocks to mitigate the effects of climate change – across all the American territories, and not just the states.

Having witnessed first-hand the long-lasting devastating effects of climate change, I know it’s not a matter of when the climate will change, but of how much it has already changed, and what we are doing to protect our people from those changes.

We need leadership that makes climate change a priority. Please contribute today, so that next year, we still have those leaders in place and ready to go to work.
