News from the Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation News from the Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation February 2022 President's Message Black History Month & Alzheimer's Prevention Dear John, During this month dedicated to Black History, I am reminded about the difference in rates of Alzheimer’s/dementia in various populations. It may be hard to believe, but African Americans have almost twice the chance of developing dementia than White Americans. Hispanic Americans are also at a much higher risk. It’s clear that biochemistry is not the cause. Instead, researchers and clinicians reveal that it is healthcare disparities, socioeconomics, and life experience that drive this difference. The disparities don’t end here: African Americans are very underrepresented in research studies, which creates significant limitations with treatment options. People of color also experience higher difficulties in obtaining access to care and support services once a diagnosis is made. Black, Hispanic, Asian and Indigenous family caregivers tend to provide more direct care while receiving less support services and facing a lack of cultural competency on the part of healthcare providers. This appalling data has been well documented for several years now, and we at ARPF are committed to steering the trend in the opposite direction. This month, we are launching ARPF Black Brain Health Initiative by hosting an important webinar called Black Brain Health & Alzheimer’s Disease: What’s Race Got to Do with It? You’ll find information below, and I hope you will join us for this critically important and topical discussion. Together, we can become a moving force for good and help prevent Alzheimer’s disease for all. I’ll see you there. REGISTER Upcoming Webinar ARPF Black Brain Health Initiative Why are People of Color at a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) than others? In this webinar, we will learn the stark reality of why Black and Brown people count for the highest number of diagnoses. We will take the opportunity to become more informed about how racism contributes to the prevalence of AD and other dementias in Black communities. Black Brain Health & Alzheimer’s Disease: What’s Race Got to Do with It? Date: Thursday, February 24th, 2022 Time: 3 pm PT / 4 pm MT / 5 pm CT / 6 pm ET Duration: 90 minutes Guest Speaker: LeTonia A. Jones, MSW Host: Christopher Walling, PsyD, MBA, C-IAYT REGISTER Community Outreach San Diego College Presentation by Trudy Russo, MA, BLS "It has been a pleasure representing ARPF in a course called ‘Alzheimer’s: The Science of Prevention Series’ for San Diego Community College Continuing Education. I gave suggestions and supported participants with ways they could take this new information and create habits to enhance a brain healthy lifestyle. At the end, participants experienced the Kirtan Kriya meditation practice. I’m always thrilled to see that many in the class report a feeling of relaxation. It’s exciting to see their motivation to learn more about brain health. It inspires me to find more places to spread the news about reducing the risk to Alzheimer’s disease.” – Trudy Russo Read More. Donor Spotlight Agustin H. "My father has had Alzheimer's disease (AD) for about 11 years now and the rate it affected him was surprising. He was diagnosed at 58– a pretty young age when we think of AD– and has been in the late stage for the last few years. I want to help provide any support I can to the research of Alzheimer's and dementia so we can better understand the disease. I hope one day people won’t have to worry about AD and won’t have to know the suffering people with AD and their families go through." Read more. DONATE There are no requirements or prerequisites to becoming a Brain Longevity Specialist– this course is for anyone interested in improving brain health and living a long, healthy life.
