Community organizations are coming together to extend the eviction moratorium. Mayor Harrell's decision to end the pandemic moratorium is a plan to allow the eviction of thousands of working-class renters in Seattle starting on March 1. This is inhumane and unacceptable. Those facing eviction are disproportionately Black working-class renters and other communities of color.
Councilmember Sawant is introducing a resolution to extend the eviction moratorium as well as calling on community to help get win a majority of the council for this simple, clear demand. Sign-up on the form below to make it clear that:
- We demand the Seattle City Council vote YES on Councilmember Kshama Sawant’s resolution to extend the eviction moratorium through the end of the COVID public health emergency.
- We further demand that Mayor Harrell reverse his decision to end the pandemic moratorium at the end of February.
We are not fooled by exaggerated claims about declining COVID cases. The fatality rate from COVID is still frighteningly high, both in the United States and globally. In fact, the daily fatality rate is still nearly as high as during the peaks of earlier waves of the pandemic. Ending the eviction moratorium now would lead to a deadly wave of evictions, and increased homelessness, in the midst of this ongoing crisis. The final vote for this City Council resolution is February 22.
