John,
Corporate Democrats are always blaming progressives for their own failures. When Democrats lose, they blame progressives in their quest for power with no questions asked. They did it when the House majority shrunk after the 2020 election and when centrists lost the Virginia governor’s race last year. And they’re doing it again as Democrats see their polling numbers slip ahead of the midterm elections in November.
Right now, headlines are abounding that show the Party blaming “Squad politics” for the grim midterm election prospects. Like this one that dropped yesterday:
Two things: 1) the majority party almost always loses their majority in the midterms and 2) the only way to prevent this is for voters to feel in their bones that President Biden and Democrats have delivered for them. But because of obstruction from a handful of corporate-backed, conservative Democrats that has not happened. This is the problem.
The Squad’s politics are doing what’s right for the people. That’s why AOC, Ilhan, Rashida, Cori, Jamaal, and Ayanna were the only House Democrats to vote to protect President Biden’s agenda to fight climate change, extend the Child Tax Credit, lower health care costs, and secure paid family and medical leave. Now, because of the Democratic Party’s inability to deliver, child poverty rose 41% after the Child Tax Credit wasn’t renewed.
We will never back down from Squad politics, because Squad politics is fighting to reduce child poverty, it’s Medicare for All, it’s a Green New Deal, it’s codifying Roe v. Wade, it’s canceling student debt, it’s racial justice, it’s raising the minimum wage to at least $15, and more.
Buried in a recent Politico article that blames the “culture war” for Democrats’ grim election polling is this critical nugget: “Voters think Democrats ‘are not making good use of their majority.’”
That’s what it really comes down to, John. If Democrats renewed the Child Tax Credit and passed Build Back Better, they’d be concretely delivering economic relief to tens of millions of people. If corporate Democrats listened less to their corporate donors, and fought for the people, they’d be creating jobs, protecting the planet, and improving life for nearly every person in this country.
That’s what Democrats could be delivering if they followed Squad politics.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
