Both houses of Congress passed a war powers resolution -- it was the
first time that had happened ever -- to end U.S. participation in the
Saudi war on Yemen. Donald Trump was president and had promised to veto,
which he did.
Candidate Joe Biden and the 2020
Democratic Party platform both promised to end U.S. participation in
that war -- participation without which many have believed for years the
war could not continue.
Since Biden became president,
however, Congress has not passed the resolution again. One bad excuse
for this inaction is that in February of last year President Biden
claimed he was (sort-of) ending U.S. involvement. This proved to be
untrue.
The Biden administration has approved billions of dollars in weapons
to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and continues to provide
logistical support, maintenance, and spare parts to the Royal Saudi
Airforce.
The war takes and damages the lives
of Yemeni civilians in huge numbers. Millions of children are suffering
acute malnutrition. The only reason that Yemen is no longer the worst
place on Earth to be is that Afghanistan has claimed that title.
Sign the petition to Congress: Pass a War Powers Resolution to end U.S. involvement in the war in Yemen!
Congress Members Jayapal and DeFazio have finally announced that they will introduce a war powers resolution.
We need to urge them to do so at once, and to urge all of their colleagues to support it.
