The results of the February 15 special election are in and one thing is clear: San Francisco voters want to elect pro-housing candidates and the YIMBY endorsement is seen as key.

The Coveted YIMBY Endorsement Moves the Electorate!

Our endorsement has been credited with helping our endorsed candidate, Bilal Mahmood, a political newcomer who had never run for office before, earn 21% of the vote against both current and former elected officials. Bilal’s strong performance shows just how powerful the SF YIMBY endorsement is: it can potentially move a full 1/5th of the electorate. YIMBY even influenced the endorsement of the biggest newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle. While Bilal will not be advancing into the runoff election in April, we thank him for developing a robust pro-housing platform and advocating strong pro-housing and pro-tenant policies. His focus resulted in more robust housing positions for all candidates across the board.

Round Two: Endorsing for the April 2022 AD-17 Runoff Election

Looking forward, YIMBY is well positioned but we need to continue demonstrating the power of our voting block to continue shifting the discourse on housing. All current and future candidates in San Francisco need to know that voters will be good to candidates with strong pro-housing platforms, and tough on candidates who lack these.

Round two of the AD-17 race will be between Supervisor Matt Haney and David Campos, with Election Day on Tuesday, April 19. YIMBY Action members living in San Francisco will see a endorsement ballot today from OpaVote to vote on who SF YIMBY should endorse.
