Problem solvers know how to solve problems…
When you need something done, call on folks who know how to make stuff happen.

With the world and much of America in disarray (Russia, Ukraine, COVID, inflation, etc.), it is nice to see the steadiness being displayed by our allies on Capitol Hill and around the nation.

The practice of two-party politics can be both inspirational and effective, but it can also be calming during chaos.

From a bipartisan deal to keep the government open, to a strong statement from senators of both parties on Ukraine, to Maine Senator Susan Collins’ new op-ed in The New York Times touting the effort she is leading to restore confidence in our election systems – Americans can take at least some comfort from the fact that the extreme, loud voices in both parties don’t always call the tune.

A great example this week of steadying conversation: The event No Labels hosted on Wednesday with Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey and former Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers.  Both men talked smartly and expertly about the role of the Federal Reserve.  If you missed the online session, you can see some highlights here and here and the full event here.

I think you will be delighted by how intelligent the conversation was, and equally struck by how respectful the two men were towards each other.

It is a reminder that the reason we fight for what we fight for – more two-party solutions to our biggest challenges – is because in a world often in disarray, the best way to fix what’s broken is by listening to the Pat Toomeys and Lawrence Summerses of the world, not the clown show stars who too often throw their hysterical brickbats into the gears of our democracy.

Like many of you, I sometimes worry about the future for my family in these uncertain times.  But I know what we are building together, our commonsense movement to unite this country led by allies who put country over party, is the right way forward.

All my best,

Five Facts on Partisanship and Congressional Districts
By No Labels

Most states have now finished drawing the new congressional maps that will be in effect for the next decade, and even though most analysts say neither party is gaining much, criticism of gerrymandering is in full swing. While partisan line-drawing is indeed a problem, however, the main driver of polarization is self-sorting among voters into “Blue” and “Red” enclaves.

Democrats and Republicans Stop Fighting, Start Passing Bills
By: Lindsay Wise

Sen. Manchin said that members of Congress are finally coming to the realization that they have to work together. “That’s the way the place was designed,” he said. “I think we oughta come back to our senses and let’s try to get something done…Republicans too need to be reaching out. We all need to give and take.”

How Magical Thinking Led America To $30 Trillion In Debt
By Andrew Tisch

In the Wizarding World of Washington, you can now say a multitrillion dollar federal spending bill “costs zero dollars.” You can claim tax cuts “pay for themselves.” You can even say the government doesn’t need tax dollars to fund anything at all because it can just “create money.”

Larry Summers: The Fed is 'well behind' the curve on inflation and should stop stimulus ASAP
By Matt Egan

Summers called for the Fed to swiftly end its bond-buying stimulus program, which was launched in March 2020 when Covid erupted. Known as quantitative easing, or QE, the program is arguably making inflation worse given that the US economy no longer needs the emergency support.
