From Health Affairs

Dear John,

The Health Affairs office is closed on Monday, February 21, in
observance of Presidents' Day. You can expect the newsletter to return
to your inbox on Tuesday, February 22.

Managed Care Enrollee Experience

For an article in the February issue, Kevin Nguyen and coauthors
investigated racial and ethnic differences in experiences of care among
Medicaid managed care enrollees.

Studying Medicaid managed care enrollee

survey data, the authors  examined racial and ethnic disparities in
four patient experience metrics.

They found that "compared with White enrollees, racial and ethnic
minority enrollees reported significantly worse experiences on all four
[quality] metrics, and disparities were primarily driven by different
experiences of care for minority enrollees within the same plan."

"Medicaid managed care plans are uniquely positioned to address racial
and ethnic disparities in patient experience of care," they concluded.

"Identifying and addressing these disparities first requires
improvements in data collection, data quality, and use of data to inform
quality improvement initiatives."
