Dear AFGE Community,
The AFGE Human Rights Committee and Women’s and Fair Practices Departments are proud to announce the launch of the Fredna S. White Memorial Scholarship. This new scholarship is aimed at supporting women-identifying AFGE members and their women-identifying family members for their exemplary academic achievement, personal accomplishment, and record of community service and engagement.
This scholarship is open to current students and high school seniors. The majority of scholarships will be awarded for undergraduate study, with occasional awards for graduate study. Click here to learn more about scholarship eligibility, selection criteria, and application instructions.
The scholarship is named in honor of Fredna S. White, an AFGE trailblazer and champion of human, civil, workers’, and women’s rights. As an AFGE leader, Fredna served as the chair of the AFGE National Human Rights Committee, National Women’s Advisory Coordinator for District 10, and the first woman to serve as president of AFGE Local 1822 in Waco, Texas. She was also an active member of the AFGE National VA Council.
In 2022, with the help of our many sponsors, we are awarding $1,000 scholarships to 20 winners who embody Sister Fredna’s spirit of activism and leadership. Thank you to the following groups for making the Fredna S. White Memorial Scholarship possible: AFGE Human Rights Committee, AFGE Women’s and Fair Practices Departments, AFGE National VA Council, AFGE President’s Office, AFGE National Secretary-Treasurer’s Office, AFGE District 2, AFGE District 3, AFGE District 4, AFGE District 5, AFGE District 6, AFGE District 7, AFGE District 8, AFGE District 9, AFGE District 10, AFGE District 11, AFGE District 12, and AFGE District 14.
