That’s the collective amount of student loan debt owed in the U.S., and it’s currently growing six times faster than our economy.

One-in-eight Americans have student loan debt — that's about 45 million people. The cost of a college education has skyrocketed, and it’s time we take action to provide relief to borrowers who are restrained from buying homes, having kids, and growing our economy due to crippling student loans.

Compared to previous generations, students are facing higher college costs and larger loans while the average value of wages decline and the risk of default increases. We must find solutions to help young borrowers attend college without taking out thousands of dollars in debt that prevents them from starting their careers and supporting their families.

People of color, first-generation college students, people with disabilities, and veterans are disproportionately impacted by this crisis. Student debt not only perpetuates systemic inequities but widens and exacerbates the Black-white wealth gap. When 45 million Americans are struggling to find a good-paying job that will help them kickstart their careers and participate in the economy without spending massive sums of their income on loan repayments — we suffer as a country.

Every American deserves the opportunity to pursue education without incurring crippling debt that saddles them from launching their professional career and life.
