About Her District
In 2018, Lauren Underwood’s opponent was a four-term Republican incumbent in a district that voted for Trump in the 2016 election. She is the first woman and first person of color to represent those living in her district.
Why She Ran
At 8 years old, Lauren Underwood was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia and the providers that helped her through her initial treatment inspired her to take on a career in nursing and public health. As an American with a pre-existing condition, Congresswoman Underwood understands the real-life importance of quality, affordable health care for working families and their children.
After working in the Obama administration as a Senior Advisor in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, she knew she had to step up and use her experience to help those in need in her community in Illinois.
Leadership in Action
Congresswoman Lauren Underwood currently represents Illinois’ 14th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives and is the youngest Black woman to ever serve in Congress.
Within her first term of office, the Congresswoman founded the Black Maternal Health Caucus and introduced a package of bills that addresses the issue of maternal mortality for women of color in the United States.
Lauren Underwood's continued commitment to serve her constituents proves that we need more leaders like her in Congress. She is not only compassionate and smart, but her expertise in public health and experience as a registered nurse is more important than ever. We are proud to support Lauren as she fights to uplift women of color and introduce progressive pieces of legislation to better support families across the nation.
At A Woman’s Place, we wholeheartedly believe that we need more women like Congresswoman Lauren Underwood representing us in government.
