John,
When Donald Trump Jr. went to Mongolia for his controversial—and expensive—sheep hunt in August 2019, it didn’t just cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars. And it didn’t just involve a retroactively issued hunting permit.
No—Don Jr. also met with the Mongolian president during his trip, without the State Department’s involvement, according to documents obtained by CREW. Read our new report here.
This is not normal. The children of sitting presidents do not typically meet privately with foreign leaders. Of course, nothing about the Trump administration was typical.
That’s not all.
These new documents also indicate that this trip cost taxpayers thousands more than we previously knew—up to $115,000—and that Don Jr. appears to have received special treatment in order to import his hunting rifle into Mongolia.
It’s no longer shocking when we learn of how the Trump family abused government resources and sought special treatment for themselves—but privately meeting with a foreign leader does and should remain shocking. Thank you,
