** NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS

We are so thrilled to launch our in-depth Muslim Women's Civic Empowerment Program (MWCEP) this month. We're conducting this fellowship-style program at the Masjid Muhammad Ali in Central Harlem. We are proud of the 15 women who have signed up for this 8-week intensive course where we aim to train Muslim women in becoming civic leaders in their respective communities.


The year started for us with the tragedy of the Twin Parks fire in the Bronx which took the lives of our community members. Together, we raised over $240,000 through our crowd-funding efforts to go towards the relief efforts. So far, we've taken detailed intake of the affected families; we've distributed food to the five different hotels where the families are residing temporarily, we've provided critical language assistance, we continue to advocate on behalf of the families for better housing solutions, and we've made an initial supplies distribution. In the coming weeks, we'll issue a press release on how the money will be distributed to the families in the most effective way and in a way that makes a difference in their lives. We thank all of our staff and volunteers for dedicating their time to this effort.

MCN is only as strong as our community is. We're proud to be a partner in helping combat hate and racism in our city. Below are pictures of our Advocacy Coordinator handing out information to taxi cab drivers about their rights and how to combat hate.

Our MYNYC Youth continue to amaze us with their leadership and enthusiasm to lead their peers on projects and issues of civic importance. Below is a picture of MYNYC Civic Leader Alimatu Radan who organized and lead a discussion on the Bill of Rights for her peers at Fredrick Douglas Academy II. We are incredibly proud of her leadership and a firm commitment to civic education!

And finally, we held our regular quarterly Muslim Stakeholder Meetings. This time, we held it townhall style to learn from past city workers how we should prioritize the needs of the Muslim community in this new administration. We are so excited to share with you the results of our survey that took the temperature on what issues are important for the Muslim community. Check out the results below.

We didn't stop there! We were joined by our wonderful interfaith friends last month, Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Reid to share with us their experience in writing a book together on how to remain friends as Muslims and Jews. The book talk was enlightening and continues to shape the values we espouse in both of our faiths, that is of brotherhood and friendship.

WELCOMING OUR NEW TEAM MEMBERS

Reda joined MCN in February 2022 as the Community Education Program Coordinator. She is a Detroit native, and the proud daughter of Muslim Immigrants. She is a strategic, transformative leader, with a demonstrated history of over 15 years of nonprofit experience that spans civic, legal, entrepreneurial, and social justice movements across the United States. She is highly skilled in Nonprofit Development and Management, Program Design and Implementation, Strategy Development and Implementation, Fundraising, Social Impact Movements, DEI, Advocacy, and Community Building. Reda is a firm believer that those closest to the problem are indeed closest to the solution, but they remain furthest from the power necessary for systemic change. She is committed to building collective liberation through a coalition of grassroots led, servant community leadership. At MCN, Reda will spearhead MCN's community education program that delivered Diversity Education presentation to schools and workplaces in
order to reduce discrimination against Muslims; she will also lead our interfaith relations. When Reda’s away from serving her community, she envelopes herself in spoken word, traveling, gardening, and the outdoors.

Fatoumata joined MCN as the Civic Leadership Youth Coordinator. She immigrated from Senegal to New in 2009. She strives to act on being part of the growth and development of children, especially young girls. Fatoumata migrated from Senegal to New York City. She completed her undergraduate studies in Political Science and Public Policy at The City College of New York. She founded the nonprofit Noko-Boku Foundation in 2018 which aims to provide educational resources to elementary schools for children living in villages and rural areas yearly. Fatoumata advocates for Mental Health Awareness, Children's Rights, and Climate Change. She was an instructor at John Jay Upward Bound in subjects such as Humanitarian Development and the United Nations Agenda. Fatoumata is enthusiastic to join the Muslim Community Network and looking forward to making leadership impacts with youth.
