Hi John, Right now a group of Indigenous leaders from across Brazil are in the UK. In the wake of this year’s disastrous fires in the Amazon, they are here to sound the alarm about increased threats against their lands. Tomorrow they are going to Downing Street to deliver a letter to Boris Johnson, along with a petition calling on Johnson to stop trade talks with Brazil until the Amazon and its people are protected. Will you add your name and help reach 250,000 signatures by the time it is delivered to Boris Johnson tomorrow? The fires in the Amazon rainforest this year - many of which were started deliberately - are the most stark example of the threats faced by Indigenous Peoples. But there has also been a sharp rise in land grabbing and invasions of protected Indigenous lands by farmers, loggers and miners since president Bolsonaro came to power a year ago [1]. Bolsonaro ran for election with a promise to open up the Amazon to economic exploitation. Since then he has undermined environmental protection agencies and attacked Indigenous rights [2]. The Indigenous leaders are travelling through Europe to raise awareness of their plight, and calling on the people and governments they meet to hold Bolsonaro to account [3]. Will you sign the petition telling Boris Johnson: No trade talks with Brazil until the Amazon and its people are protected? Indigenous Peoples are guardians of the natural world. 80% of the world’s biodiversity is to be found on Indigenous lands [4], and deforestation rates in the Amazon are 11 times lower in Indigenous lands [5]. As guardians of the forest, they are putting their lives on the line. Will you stand in solidarity with them and add your name to the petition? Thanks for your support! James and the forests team.
