*Discovering Elgar:* Leading British conductor Mark Wigglesworth is joined by broadcaster Stephen Johnson, who’ll be shedding light on the origins and form of the Elgar’s First Symphony, with live extracts from the BBC Philharmonic, before a performance of the complete work.

Its premiere in 1908 attracted huge public interest and it didn’t disappoint: the conductor, Hans Richter, proclaimed it ‘the greatest symphony of modern times’ and it received over a hundred performances worldwide in the following year. 

There is also a free pre-concert performance at  6.20pm: Emily Hodkinson (mezzo-soprano) who performs Elgar’s Sea Pictures

The Screen at Contemporary returns with a selection from the infamous film society Cinema 16 (1947–63), run by Amos and Marica Vogel, full of avant-garde, underground and commercial films.

Charlie Chaplin’s iconic tramp character has a series of misadventures as he tries to survive the industrialised modern world. 

A glorious masterpiece of the silent era that feels thematically relevant today.

A cinematic historical artefact, Modern Times is an example of a premonition of the world which was to come.
