John, I have some good news to share:
I’m proud to share that our African American History Act legislation has a home in the U.S. Senate — with Senator Cory Booker, who has stepped up to introduce this bill in the Senate.
I couldn't be more excited to be in partnership with Sen. Booker, and to be the lead on this legislation in the House of Representatives. Now more than ever, we must push for more investments in our history education. Because the truth is, John — harmful ideologies still exist and manifest in our education systems.
In fact, just last week — here in New York, in our district — there was a public display of hateful, racist, and anti-Semitic rhetoric during a school board meeting. A handful of people tried to take us several steps back into a world where people of color, especially Black students, had to live in fear and experience harassment simply for seeking an education.
As not only a former teacher and principal with over 20 years of experience, but a Black father to three children, it pains me to see a situation like this — especially in our schools, which are places that are supposed to serve as a safe haven for our kids.
We must prioritize protecting, loving, and above all educating our kids. Because when division is sown and hate is spewed, the people who end up losing the most are our kids. We must be united in our love and commitment to our children and their education.
We must come together to uproot this hatred and show that we refuse to regress as a society. That’s why I’m so passionate about legislation like the African American History Act, and why I’m so happy to have the support of Sen. Booker in the Senate.
