The past few months have seen some truly astonishing victories in the battle to keep our kids safe online. In addition to our recent discussions with Apple and Instagram—in which both companies promised to make the changes we’ve advocated—we assisted members of the Senate Commerce Committee with a congressional hearing called Protecting Kids Online: Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube. At the hearings, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube were called out in front of the US Senate for the harm their products inflict on kids. Witness testimony and evasive answers to pointed questions made it painfully clear: these platforms are dangerous, opaque, and not doing enough to protect young users. Thanks to your support, NCOSE was able to help our allies in Congress shine more light on the truly wretched conduct of the most popular social media platforms—and their unwillingness to take even the most reasonable action to protect our kids. As a result of the hearings, NCOSE is demanding the following... - Investigations with subpoenas
- A meaningful regulatory framework — one with real teeth
- Appointment of a federal E-Safety commissioner to
improve industry oversight - A bump in the digital age of adulthood from 13 to 17, as required by the PRIVACY Act
- Successful passage of these critical bills: EARN It Act (increased liability for tech companies), CAMRA Act (research on the effects of tech on kids), and Fix App Ratings (a Congressional bill recommending the industry appoint an app ratings board)
- Age-appropriate safeguards BY DEFAULT on platforms likely to be used by children
We're working tirelessly to protect our children and grandchildren—including yours—when they go online. But YOU are the key. Your generous support is what makes this great progress possible. Any success is YOUR success! Thanks to your partnership in this crucial work, the momentum WILL continue to build in our favor. Thank you again for your generosity. |
