Friend,

We are in the midst of what is perhaps the most perilous time for
democracy we've ever seen.

In the U.S., the Republican National Committee just passed a resolution
describing the violent January 6 insurrection as "legitimate political
discourse." More than 440 bills across 49 states were introduced in
2021 to make it harder to vote. The Supreme Court-after a decades-long
takeover by right-wing factions-just shredded what's left of the
Voting Rights Act.

Candidates who've been openly hostile about free and fair elections are
now running for key state-level offices under the "Big Lie" banner.
If elected, or if these forces are allowed to consolidate and grow, the
future of democracy-not just in the U.S., but globally-looks very
bleak indeed.

The warning lights of democracy are flashing red. The next 8 to 10
months could decide whether democracy survives at all in the years
ahead.

There's never been a more important time to have hard-hitting
independent media covering the news each and every day. Beholden only to
its readers, Common Dreams is journalism you can trust.

Today we're asking you to help make sure we can stay strong during
these dangerous times. Please support our work by helping us reach our
Winter Fundraising Campaign goal of $80,000 by month's end.
