John,
That is the number of white, male judges to sit on the Supreme Court out of the total. Of all the judges to sit on the bench since the Supreme Court was established, a mere six have possessed an identity that was not white and male. [1]
In a country that supposedly prides itself on diversity and equality, that number is abysmal. Donate to say you agree.
Thankfully, President Biden is taking a tiny step towards rectifying this with his promise to nominate a Black, female justice who, if confirmed, would be the country’s first. [2] We believe this is long overdue and we are excited to see which of the many qualified candidates Biden will chose.
Unfortunately, this historic moment is already tainted with conservative claims of ‘quota filling’ or ‘affirmative action hire’ [3] and offensive questioning of the qualifications of possible nominees. Even worse, history has shown us that white and male nominees are confirmed at a significantly faster rate than nominees of color – a fact many believe comes from sexism and racism. [4]
Join in demanding the nominee be treated to a fair and swift process, just as SCOTUS nominees under Trump were.
There is no question that the Supreme Court shapes the direction of our country. And there is no doubt that the unique experience and history of each justice has an impact on their decisions and rulings.
We believe it is beyond time for the judicial consciousness of our nation to include a Black woman. Don’t you?
Sincerely,
Erin Matson
Executive Director, Reproaction
P.S. There is a deep bench of qualified Black, female, judges for Biden to choose from and any other idea is not only nonsense, it’s racist. And it can’t stand.
