As a former professor, I love engaging with students. One of the most fun
parts of campaigning is getting to earn the votes of students who attend
UC Irvine or one of the many community colleges in the district.

In 2018, we had a field office right on campus. That allowed students to
easily volunteer and learn about our campaign. We even canvassed in the
dorms—where you can talk to a whole lot of voters in a very short time—and
found that some of our best canvassers were our retired volunteers. We
also found that our student volunteers were some of the most successful
canvassers in retirement communities! Recently, I talked about how there
is really something special and infectious about people interacting across
generations, united by a common goal of electing candidates who will stand
up to special interests, address climate change, and protect our

In 2022, we’ll have to work hard to earn the votes of students—who will be
key to our success. And because students tend to move frequently, we’ll
have to invest in voter education so that students remember to update
their voter registration and receive a ballot on time.
