Indivisibles,
We’re thrilled to be launching our biggest 2022 program yet today, and we
want you to be the first to know:
🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Announcing Let’s Go, Joe! -- Indivisible's program to cheer on President Biden
and encourage him to take action on the issues that will most impact everyday
Americans.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
So what does this program actually do? We’re glad you asked. We’re going
to use all the tools in Indivisible’s playbook to encourage Biden to take
action. That means public events. It means behind-the-scenes lobbying. It
means tweets at the White House. It means digital ads. It even means (you
guessed it) calls to members of Congress. We’ll be asking President Biden
to do something very simple -- use the power that the American people
invested in him to take action on some of the top issues of our day:
things like student debt, lowering prescription drug prices, climate
change and more.
In the next section of this email, we’re going to explain in a little more
detail exactly what that means. But if you’re already all in, or have
anything you’d like to share, [ [link removed] ]click here to take our Let’s Go Joe
survey and let us know which issues you’d most like President Biden to
take on this spring.
[ [link removed] ]What issues should president Biden prioritize?
What Can President Biden Do?
Policymaking usually focuses entirely on pressuring Congress to take
action. And during the Trump years and early in the Biden Administration,
that made a lot of sense. President Trump wouldn’t listen to us, and for
most of last year, it looked like Congress could actually make some
progress. Plus, you have the most leverage with your own member of
Congress (remember that for the next section). That’s all still true.
Legislation is better and longer-lasting than actions taken by the
Executive office (and we’re still going to be pushing for Congress to
act). But… we’re in a critical moment to demand bold action from the Biden
Administration and, if we’re successful, win meaningful and immediate
improvements to people's lives.
And that’s where President Biden comes in.
He has the ability to do a lot – a WHOLE lot – with the stroke of a pen.
(Remember the DACA program? President Obama got relief for undocumented
young adults through executive action. FDR signed more than 3,000
executive orders! This is common!)
Right now, there are four main buckets where we think President Biden can
take quick and decisive action that will improve people’s lives
immediately: Economic Justice (including Student Debt) & Tax Fairness,
Climate Change, Healthcare & Prescription Drug Pricing and other Racial
Justice Reforms (like Immigration and more). Over the coming months, we’ll
be calling on him to do just that.
Joe Biden promised to take action on these things – by cheering him on and
telling him we’ve got his back, we’re providing public support and
encouragement to help him across the finish line.
What can Members of Congress do?
If you’ve been with Indivisible for a while, you know we’re very focused
on members of Congress, so you won’t be surprised to hear that we think
they have a role to play here.
For better or worse, members of Congress, particularly in the President’s
own party, have a lot of influence with the commander in chief. So when
they call on POTUS to do something, it has an impact.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus has begun to indicate they’re going
to encourage President Biden to take executive actions on top priorities.
That could come in the form of letters to the administration, committee
hearings, op-eds and agenda-setting power. While they haven’t yet said
exactly what their calls to action will be, we’re preparing to support
them. Which brings us to…
What Can I Do?
Glad you asked! There are some tried-and-true administrative advocacy
tactics we’ll be teaching you about in the coming weeks. In the near term,
here are the easiest three asks:
1. If you have DEMOCRATIC members of Congress (i.e. the ones President
Biden is most likely to listen to): Call your Democratic senator(s)
([ [link removed] ]Senate script here) or representative ([ [link removed] ]House script here) and
ask them to tell President Biden to take action (Let’s Go Joe!). Those
two scripts are about climate relief and student debt, but over the
coming weeks, we’ll provide scripts for more priority issues.
2. If you have a REPUBLICAN member of Congress or no congressional
representation: [ [link removed] ]Advocate with the administration directly. Real
talk, calling the White House comment line is A LOT less effective
than calling your MoC, BUT being in a red state and telling President
Biden that you support bold executive action does give him more cover
to say "see these actions are overwhelmingly popular across party
lines.
3. [ [link removed] ]Take our Let’s Go Joe Executive Action survey. Your responses will
help us understand which potential executive actions matter most to
our movement, and what you’re excited to work on.
There are some other tactics in our [ [link removed] ]Executive Action Explainer if
you’re really excited about this work and want to do more.
Administrative advocacy is new to us as an organization, but the truth is,
this isn’t so different from what we’ve been doing. All the same theories
of change we’ve always promoted about how to wield our constituent power
stay the same. We’re excited to be going with you into this new adventure!
In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
P.S. – Real talk, since we’ve been focused on getting this up and running,
we’re a liiiittle behind on our fundraising goal for the month. If you’re
excited about this work and want to support it, [ [link removed] ]we’d really appreciate
a donation today. :)
