“Friend of the Court Wrangler”

Once again, GOC is jumping into the legal fray in defense of the 2nd Amendment by requesting the U.S. Supreme Court hear the case of Bianchi v Frosh.

In this challenge to the state of Maryland’s ban on so-called “assault weapons”, GOC’s funded “friend of the court” brief ensures the powerful voice of law enforcement and other 2nd Amendment groups are considered by the court. GOC’s request for the case to be heard (certiorari) asks that conflicting legal opinions that have been handed down by circuit courts to be resolved.  Courts have frequently relied upon and have rendered decisions based on inaccurate data; the brief therefore asks SCOTUS to dispel the many “assault weapon” inaccuracies that have played such a significant role in 2nd Amendment rulings.

“GOC has been dubbed the “Amicus Brief Wrangler” and we carry this title with great pride.  We know there are a lot of voices that need to be heard by the Supreme Court and we have made it our goal to make sure this happens.  That’s why funding briefs of this nature are so important.”

GOC Executive Director Sam Paredes

A portion of GOC’s Summary of Argument states: “The Petition should be granted because Courts of Appeals that have upheld bans such as Maryland’s have relied on provably false claims that make it seem as if AR-15s and other banned rifles (modern sporting rifles, or MSRs) are somehow vastly different from and more dangerous than ordinary semiautomatic rifles. They are not. The AR-15 is the most commonly possessed arm in the country. The best government and industry data show that there were at least 21 million MSRs in the national stock as of 2019. Because 40 million firearms were sold in 2020 and 202, that number is likely much higher today.”

It is important to remember that although this is a non-California case, a positive decision by the Supreme Court could provide precedent and thus greatly impact “assault weapon” laws across the country. To join GOC’s efforts, click HERE.
