Research shows that carbon price would reduce economic inflation
You've probably noticed more talk of inflation in the news headlines
lately, or perhaps you've seen prices creeping up in your day-to-day
purchases. As Congress works to advance Build Back Better policies in
some form, some members of Congress are pointing to inflation
[link removed]
as a reason not to act on climate at this time.
Fortunately, CCL Research Coordinator Dana Nuccitelli has written about
carbon pricing and inflation
[link removed]
. Dana explains, "The evidence overwhelmingly indicates that the
inclusion of a carbon price and dividend in the budget reconciliation
package will not worsen inflationary effects, and may in fact help to
ease inflation."
That is based on a recent review of carbon pricing systems in Canada and
Europe, which found that contrary to economic modeling predictions that
carbon fees will cause inflation, carbon fees have actually had the
opposite effect in the real world.

Take action this week
If you have a little time: Share this tweet about business and climate
action
The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) tweeted a press
release announcing that 27 companies have asked Congress to refocus on
Build Back Better climate provisions. C2ES emphasized, "Climate
solutions are a business imperative." You can like and share that tweet

If you have more time: Watch the recording of the monthly call
CCL had our monthly national call this past Saturday, featuring guest
speaker James Balog of the Earth Vision Institute. Additionally, we got
to hear a legislative update from CCL Vice President of Government
Affairs Danny Richter. Danny shared that while the focus has been on
Democratic Senators during reconciliation, CCL is still working to
engage Republican volunteers, as well as Republican members of Congress.

Taking a closer look at your portfolio? Consider an appreciated gift of
stock.
If you own stocks, you've probably been taking a closer look at your
portfolio lately. 2022 has been off to a volatile start, which means
this may be a good time to adjust your holdings. As you do, keep in mind
that donating appreciated stock
[link removed]
can be a powerful way to protect the climate and reap increased tax
benefits.
When you make a charitable contribution of appreciated stock, you're
able to donate the stock at its fair market value and avoid capital
gains tax. That equals a greater impact to power Citizens' Climate's
bipartisan grassroots climate advocacy, and it can mean a larger
charitable deduction for you!

Just remember: every financial situation is different, and we always
recommend seeking advice from a financial professional to discuss the
implications of your gift. Note that gifts of stock to 501(c)(3)
Citizens' Climate Education

(CCE) are tax-deductible, whereas gifts to 501(c)(4) Citizens' Climate
Lobby

(CCL) are not. Gifts to CCL can still provide certain benefits, however,
like avoiding capital gains taxes.

Lobbying: CCL asks Sen. Warnock about climate change at town hall
The members of Atlanta's CCL chapter recently got the opportunity to ask
[link removed]
Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) about clean energy initiatives. Sen.
Warnock hosted a Friday night town hall when Georgia state coordinator
Henry Slack asked for the senator's thoughts on clean energy and a price
on carbon.
Sen. Warnock replied, "I think that we need to incentivize clean
energy…the Senate is an interesting place…so I'll continue to talk to my
colleagues on both sides of the aisle to figure out how we can make some
progress on clean energy."
This exchange shows that lobbying our members of Congress doesn't only
happen through calls, emails, and meetings, but also through creative
engagement in our districts and states.
