John,

I recently shared why it's important to eliminate the food sales tax in an op-ed for The Wichita Eagle. Today, I want to take a moment to chat with you more about finally eliminating the state food sales tax.

For too long, Kansans have been paying more for groceries than almost any other state. At 6.5%, we have the second-highest food sales tax in the country. Between the high food sales tax and the pandemic-induced inflation on groceries, Kansans are struggling to get by.

It's wrong, and something needs to change.

Last November, I announced my plan to “Axe the Food Tax” -- a complete elimination of the state food sales tax -- an effort that’s estimated to save Kansas families an average of $500 every year. And last month, during my State of the State address, I called on the Kansas Legislature to act in a bipartisan manner and present a clean bill with no frills to end the food sales tax once and for all.

If you agree that it's time to finally axe the state food sales tax, add your name to join me in calling on the Kansas Legislature to put forward no-frills legislation today.

We've already laid the foundation and we've shown that we can responsibly manage the state's budget while saving Kansans money. It's not an either/or situation. We can Axe the Food Tax WHILE we fully fund our public schools, fix our roads and bridges, AND expand access to high-speed internet. The legislature just needs to take action and get the job done.

It's time to start putting hundreds of dollars back into the pockets of Kansans. Add your name to join me in urging the legislature to Axe the Food Tax.

Thank you,
