Dear John
A few weeks ago, with the help of Best for Britain’s
supporters and a powerful coalition of other campaigns, the House of
Lords inflicted fourteen defeats on the Government in the
controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts
Bill.
The Bill takes aim at the right to
protest and our freedom to use our voices for causes we care about.
We’re no strangers to protesting, so we worked directly with
sympathetic Peers to table an amendment to the bill which would mean
protests in Parliament Square could continue. But our
amendment needs protecting in the Commons.
Now that the Lords have made
changes to the Bill, those changes will need to be approved by MPs.
And the government still has a majority in the House of Commons.
Will you ask your MP to protect our amendment and your
civil liberties with it?
Even if - ESPECIALLY if - your MP is a Conservative, they
need to hear from you. It
doesn’t matter if you think your MP won’t agree with us. It doesn’t
matter if your MP never replies. Some will take note, and some will
act. And we need to make sure no MP can say their
constituents haven’t raised concerns - so take action
now.
By trying to prevent protest, it is
clear that this government wants to make it more difficult for us to
hold them to account. It’s clear to see why. They are failing in every
way - failing to provide the promised ‘benefits of Brexit’; failing to
get a grip on the cost of living crisis; failing, even, to uphold the
law in Downing Street.
Of course they don’t want accountability. That’s why you
must act now, to secure the safety systems of our
democracy.
So, click on the button above and
use our simple Hey-MP tool to send an email or social media message to
your MP. It won’t take more than a couple of minutes, but it will show
MPs that they need to protect your right to protest in order to retain
your trust.
Best wishes,
Naomi Smith
