Friend, yesterday marked four years since the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students and educators – including my friend Fred Guttenberg's daughter Jaime – were senselessly murdered with an assault weapon designed for war. Yesterday also marked four years of inaction in the Senate.

All these years later without change because politicians like Marco Rubio have prioritized the gun lobby's agenda over the lives of our loved ones. So I want to make sure you saw Fred's message.

We're approaching four years since my beautiful daughter, Jaime, was murdered in her classroom at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. No matter how much time goes by, she is on my mind every second of every minute of every day.

I had never spoken out about gun violence before my Jaime was murdered. I would never have guessed that gun violence could affect me and my family. But no one is safe from gun violence – and it hurts me to describe our country like that. So now, the work to end this violence – to spare other families this pain – has become my life's purpose and mission.

That's why I'm reaching out today. Just a week after my daughter was murdered, I confronted Marco Rubio at a town hall on gun safety. He couldn't even look at me. He refused to work with Parkland survivors to reduce gun violence. He refused to make it more difficult for people to access assault weapons like the one used to kill my Jaime, 13 other students and three educators. Marco Rubio failed Floridians.

I will do anything I can to make sure Marco Rubio is no longer able to fail our families and communities in the Senate – and there is no one better than Val Demings, a fierce advocate for gun safety, to replace him. Val Demings can win in Florida and expand our gun safety majority in the Senate – but the GOP is rolling out a full attack ad blitz to defeat her, so I promised I'd help raise $50,000 by midnight to make sure she can fight back.
