Jack, Georgia Republicans are so threatened by Stacey Abrams that they are trying to change the rules mid-campaign.

Republicans in the state legislature are trying to make it harder for people to run against them, or any incumbent in state office, by placing a fundraising ban on challengers, like Stacey Abrams who is running for governor. These Republicans have introduced a bill preventing challengers from raising funds while the legislature is in session. The bill could pass as soon as this week, halting Abrams' needed fundraising for her campaign for the next few months.

This law would put any challenger at a massive disadvantage–including Daily Kos-endorsed Democrat Stacey Abrams. That's why we need to make sure she has the resources to overcome the numerous barriers that Republicans are putting in her path to the governor's mansion. Can you support Stacy Abrams by donating $5 today?

As a general rule of thumb, incumbents have the upper hand when it comes to campaigning. They tend to have higher name recognition and access to deeper pockets for fundraising.

Some states have seen fundraising access as a conflict of interest, as it looks bad for a governor or lawmaker to take a check at the same time they are considering legislation that a donor may be trying to influence. For this reason, many states ban fundraising for lawmakers during the legislative session. Even with these bans, it doesn't change the fact that incumbents typically raise more money than their challengers.

However, some public officials, like GOP Gov. Brian Kemp, found a loophole. Kemp has created a leadership committee that can raise funds for his campaign. So far this session, his leadership committee has raised over $355,000. A U.S. District judge ruled that Kemp can't use those funds in his primary, but he can use them in the general election against Stacy Abrams.

It's possible that Kemp's allies could pass a law that cut off Stacey Abrams' fundraising for the next few months. That means she needs to raise the resources to be competitive RIGHT NOW. Jack, can you donate $5 to her campaign now?
