To help fight right-wing book bans, we're giving away "I Read Banned Books" stickers and bookmarks for free while supplies last.
Dear John,
Just days after a Tennessee school board banned Maus, a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust, from being taught in schools, a church in the state held a book burning.1 Video from the event shows hundreds of people gleefully tossing books deemed "demonic" into the fire.2
Across the country, book bans have risen dramatically over the past year, led by right-wing politicians intent on stopping kids from learning about race, sexual orientation, gender identity, different cultures, or even just an unbiased history of our country.
It’s a blatant, despicable attack on our freedoms and an attempt to control the minds of our kids.
We cannot, and will not, let it happen.
MoveOn has launched a full-scale campaign to stop book bans, bans on the teaching of race in America, and other attempts by the right wing to take over our schools. To help spread the word, we've just printed a big batch of these "I Read Banned Books" stickers and bookmarks, and we're giving them away for free while supplies last.
Attempts by school boards and other lawmakers to ban books are soaring to levels not seen in decades. According to the American Library Association, there were at least 330 attempts to ban books last fall, a number they reported as "unprecedented."3
Make no mistake: These are attempts by Republicans to wage a white supremacist culture war and march our country closer toward authoritarianism.
They will not win.
As we have done in the past, our grassroots, people-powered movement will fight back, and together we will succeed.
