Your Investments in Black (Girl) Histories are Investments in their Futures

This week's featured guest piece is from the desk of Dr. Monique W. Morris, President & CEO of Grantmakers for Girls of Color (G4GC), a WFN member.

Dr. Morris shares her insights on the meaning of Black History Month and the lasting impacts investing more than $10 million in over 200 organizations across 50 states, Washington, D.C., Guam, and Puerto Rico has had for girls and young women of color.

She also highlights G4GC's 2nd annual Black Girl Freedom Week (Feb. 14-20) happening this week. Hosted by the #1Billion4BlackGirls campaign and Black Girl Freedom Fund, an initiative of Grantmakers for Girls of Color, Black Girl Freedom Week is an annual week-long celebration of, and action for, Black girls, femmes and gender-expansive youth* which amplifies the artistic vision, leadership, and genius of Black girls.

"Noting the roots of Black History Month is important because it elevates the reality that we cannot acknowledge that which we do not know – or remember. Black girls have long been some of the nation’s most clear and consistent articulators of justice in the U.S. For generations, Black girls have been active in social movements, innovation, and enterprises that advance access to institutions, structures, and visions that lead to their liberated futures. Knowing about this history is critical to understanding the importance of Sankofa, a West African principle that insists on the notion that the past informs the future."

Carly Hare will be stepping down as Coalition Catalyst/National Director at CHANGE Philanthropy on February 18, 2022. Carly has been a part of the CHANGE Philanthropy family for more than 12 years, going back to the Joint Affinity Groups (JAG) days, and she has led the coalition for the last seven years.

CHANGE Philanthropy has launched the 2022 Diversity Among Philanthropic Professionals (DAPP) survey to help the philanthropic community better understand its workforce and leadership. Sign up your foundation here by March 11.

The Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR), with Foundation CHANEL and Pivotal Ventures, a Melinda French Gates company, will host the Power+ Summit on April 27 - 28, 2022, to accelerate women's power and influence in society. WFN President and CEO, Elizabeth Barajas-Román, will be speaking.

The Wallace Foundation released 3 episodes of their new podcast series focused on social and emotional learning, “Let’s Talk Social and Emotional Learning.”

SoCal Grantmakers has announced the call for applications for their inaugural 2022 evolve Executives and Trustees Network. This peer-learning program brings select foundation leaders and trustees to provide a unique professional learning experience centered around leading with authenticity. Application deadline is Thursday, February 24^th.

Queer The Lens has launched the national LGBTQIA+ photo & video industry survey, which aims to understand the needs of the community so they can help ensure folks are getting the support that they need to succeed.

Responses to the survey will be accepted until April 30, 2022.

The Wallace Foundation has released a new study, A Place to be Heard; a Space to Feel Held: Black Perspectives on Creativity, Trustworthiness, Welcome and Well-Being–Finding, which suggests that Black communities most value arts experiences that celebrate their creativity, support self-care, earn trust and foster a sense of belonging.

Join Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP) and EPIP Chicago Chapter for Philanthropology™, a 3-module social justice grounding in philanthropy.
