Earthquake and Tsunami in Indonesia
==========================================
A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake and a tsunami struck Indonesia on September 28. Thanks to the ongoing support of Project HOPE donors, our medical team was one of the first international responders on the ground, and additional Project HOPE volunteers joined them in the days that followed.
Our team has been taking care of urgent medical needs since they got to the area. Homes, public building, roads and bridges were destroyed, and many people are still being treated outside because of serious damage to hospitals.

Venezuelan Crisis
==========================================
Venezuelans are in the grips of an unimaginable crisis. Faced with a crumbling economy and massive healthcare and food shortages, nearly 1 in 10 have fled their country in search of better lives for themselves and their families. And it's getting worse--1.8 million more Venezuelans are expected to be displaced this year due in part to huge food and medicine shortages.
Our team is on the ground in the border communities of Colombia assessing the needs of displaced families who have gone too long without medical care--and we're deploying a team of medical volunteers to Cúcuta, in the Norte de Santander region, where they will be supporting the Hospital Universitario Erasmo Meoz in providing care and services to Venezuelans who have crossed the border.

Puerto Rico--Then and now
==========================================
Over a year ago, Hurricane Maria ripped through Puerto Rico. Thousands were left without homes and electricity. Many people were killed. So many more were hurt and left without essential medical care.
Project HOPE was one of the very first to respond and has been in country every day since the disaster, working to repair and rebuild. Volunteers have been key for our ongoing response.
"As volunteers, we used our compassion and willingness to help enable change on a small scale," says Sue Flower, a volunteer nurse for Project HOPE.
The volunteers who remain in Puerto Rico say the community is resilient and working to prepare for another hurricane season. Still, many communities continue to need fresh food, good education, and more. "But there is HOPE. 'Anything is possible,'" Flower says. "That's the rallying cry from all avenues on this amazing island."

On the Ground in Ethiopia with Chris Skopec
==========================================
PH: Chris, tell us a little about what you did in Ethiopia with Project HOPE.
Chris: I was there to assist with two health programs. The more prominent of those was the Community HIV Care and Treatment. Our main goal was to help identify locals at risk for HIV and bring them in for testing. Once they come in, we can test them, educate them, and provide them with a treatment plan if necessary. It's all about education and prevention.
PH: What were some of the challenges you faced during your time in country?
Chris: The biggest challenges were working around the stigma associated with HIV and AIDS. Most people's reaction to a potential diagnosis is to be very quiet about it. Our goal was to get them to understand it better, to feel more comfortable educating their family and community.
PH: Can you share a memorable accomplishment from the program?
Chris: About a year in, there was a local woman we'd identified as high risk for HIV. We visited her home repeatedly, hoping we could convince her to come in for testing. Finally, she agreed. She and her children came to our clinic and were tested. The woman and her son tested positive, and we were able to start them on a treatment plan. When she realized her son's life had been in danger, she was so grateful.
PH: What is one thing you want Project HOPE supporters to know?
Chris: None of what we've accomplished would be possible without you. There's still so much work to do, but together, we can make it happen.

Good food. Good health.
A balanced diet is vital to good health, but many people in South Africa don't have access to the fresh foods necessary for good nutrition. Our Healthrise Program was able to help train local farmers to harvest more fresh vegetables and educate local health care workers on the importance of a healthy diet.
