Dear People For supporter, Last week, news broke that the National Archives & Records Administration had to retrieve 15 boxes of official presidential records from Mar-a-Lago – taken there in apparent violation of the Presidential Records Act of 1978. Then later in the week it was revealed that some of these records were marked “top secret” – the highest level of classified information for U.S. Government documents.[1] These actions, of course, represent the latest offenses in a longstanding pattern of contempt for the rules by the Trump administration when it comes to preserving official government records.[2] But we simply cannot dismiss such a clear and obvious violation of the law. If the rule of law means anything, there must be consequences for breaking it. And under Title 18, Section 2071 of the U.S. Code, anyone who engages in the “unlawful removal or destruction of government records” is subject to a fine, up to three years’ imprisonment, and having to “forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States.” While the work of the January 6 Select Committee proceeds in holding accountable ALL those who engaged in seditious conspiracy to overthrow our government last year, we must not lose sight of other violations of the law committed in the final days of the Trump administration. So please speak out and let your Representative in Congress know that this matter deserves thorough investigation. Thanks for your support of People For the American Way and for taking action on this issue! Sincerely, Will, People For's Digital Team
