Crippling Cost of Living Crisis

Parliamentary Diary

Dear Friend,

The Tories' crippling cost of living crisis

This Tory-made cost of living crisis is crippling many in Cardiff North. Soaring bills, stagnant wages and an imminent tax hike mean that the numbers simply don't add up.

An 80 year old constituent wrote to me asking me to 'shout and scream' at this Government, as his energy bills are set to rise to £3,000 a year. He just wants the Government to listen and to do something about it. Instead, this Conservative Government has turned its back.

Handing out dodgy loans and hammering families as they're forced to pay it back for years to come. Refusing to back Labour's plan to cut VAT on home energy bills and tax the huge profits of oil and gas companies and making families bear the brunt with a tax hike instead.

Meanwhile our Welsh Labour Government has doubled the winter fuel payment scheme and is battling the UK Government's broken promises on Wales receiving £175 million in new money to help tackle the cost of living crisis.

The importance of Labour in power at every level of government has never been more vital. Delivering for local communities and standing up against the Tories' decisions that are hitting the pockets of hard-working families.

I hope you'll join us as we campaign to elect our Welsh Labour candidates right across Cardiff North and show our communities the difference Labour in power makes.

With very best wishes,

Anna

New Visitor Hub Underway at Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs
It's a very exciting time at Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs as work is now underway to build Welsh Water Dwr Cymru's brand new visitor hub. Cardiff North Labour has been fighting alongside the local community to save the reservoirs for over twenty years, so it's fantastic to see progress.

Welsh Water have some exciting plans for the site and have been working alongside Friends of Cardiff Reservoirs to ensure this project works for the community. Once completed, the site will bring back an array of water sports such as windsurfing, stand up paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking. I look forward to see the plans taking shape in the months ahead.

Ty Glas recycling centre
to open next month
I'm very pleased that plans have been announced for a new recycling centre at Ty Glas in Llanishen is due to open next month, after extensive lobbying from the Cardiff North Labour Team.
Plans for a new Cardiff North high school will stake take years of planning and demolition works of the old tax office. The facility will make best use of the space whilst that work is underway. The centre will process the most popular waste items and will be open on Saturday's via an appointment system.

Lighting & Safety Improvements in Heath & Birchgrove
Great to see new overlapping barriers have been installed on both sides of St Agnes Road and Heath Park Lane entrances following local residents raising concerns to local councillors Graham Hinchey and Julie Sangani of speeding cyclists and illegal motorcycles using this route.

Local councillors arranged a site meeting with residents and highways officers and are currently working with them and local police on a a better solution for the access points.

UK Government says taxation not the answer?
[link removed]

In Welsh Questions last week, I asked the Minister what I am supposed to tell my constituents whose energy bills will cripple them. He told me that taxation wasn't the answer. But what he really meant was he wasn't prepared to tax the huge profits of oil and gas companies, who're seeing their highest profits in 8 years, but instead would lump that tax hike onto the British public instead.

Shameful.
Your MP for Cardiff North

It is now almost 5 years since I was first elected as your Labour MP for Cardiff North. Voters have twice elected me with a healthy majority in what was long considered a marginal swing seat. It has been an immense privilege to represent you on the issues that matter to you most, standing up against this Conservative Government and standing in solidarity with local members and activists on important campaigns.

We know there is more to be done to turn the tide on this unprincipled Tory Government in Westminster. That is why I have taken the decision to seek re-selection as the Cardiff North candidate for the Labour Party at the next General Election.
Speaking out on coercive control

[link removed]

No one deserves to feel like a shadow of their former self. This really can happen to anyone. I speak to survivors day in and day out as Shadow Victims Minister, that's why I felt it was so important to speak out about my own experiences. I hope that speaking my truth can given others the courage to take the first step too.
Victims Bill consultation response
View Full Response ([link removed])
The Victims' Bill Consultation was long overdue as this government can't keep failing victims and letting criminals off the hook. Labour has been calling for a Victims' Bill for six years, with five previous Justice Secretaries promising yet failing to deliver.

We know that the Government can get legislation wrong. We've seen it with the divisive Policing Bill, parts of which threaten the right to dissent and protest and attack our fundamental liberties as citizens. It's so important that this new legislation truly puts victims at the heart of our criminal justice system and isn't just another example to add to the Tories file of failure.
Labour Tackling Sexual Violence
[link removed]
Last week marked Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week.

Organisations across the country are working in unity to raise awareness that #ItsNotOK and amplify voices that often go unheard. I am really proud of the work Labour has done across the country to tackle sexual abuse and sexual violence, and specifically here in Wales to improve the experiences of victims of sexual violence in the justice system. I met with Mayor of West Yorkshire who highlighted what Labour in power can achieve.
Chairing the new APPG on Deforestation
I'm really pleased to announce I am the co-Chair of the newly established APPG on Deforestation. Whilst at COP26, I met with many indigenous communities who're having their lives torn apart by deforestation and the global impact on climate change. I look forward to working with Global Witness in scrutinising the UK Government on its policies and priorities.
Casework Catch Up
Citizenship Ceremony

A Libyan family of 4 were experiencing long delays in receiving their British citizenship. I pursued this with the Home Office and the family have now attended a citizenship ceremony and have received their documentation.

Social Care Support Plan

My 88 year old constituent was in UHW for 3 months, unable to leave after treatment due to a lack of social care support. I helped her husband put this in place and he now reports his wife is back home with him with the support she requires.

Treatment for Genetic Condition

A constituent who was identified with a genetic condition after contracting Covid was unable to receive the same treatment in Wales that she would have automatically received in England. I'm pleased to report the constituent is now receiving the medication they need and future patients with this condition will also receive treatment.
Photo of the day
Cadi and I are loving our new adventures living in Llandaff North and exploring the fields (and muddy puddles!) nearby. This picture was from our gorgeous, evening winter walk recently.

Have a great week!
