Podcast 'Green Talking Heads' – 2 new episodes available
In our 2-part episode, Green MEP Kim van Sparrentak and Digital Worker
Rights Activist James Farrar assess the challenges that platform workers
face – an increasing amount of workers who rely on being paid for each
completed task (gig) in the gig economy.
New disruptive digital technologies lead to innovation, but also risk
endangering existing worker’s rights and protections – leading to the
need to regulate digital working rights.
About the Green Talking Heads
Green Talking Heads is a podcast series in which Green leaders and
activists discuss the most pressing issues we face today as we enter the
COVID-19 pandemic’s second year and face a period of increased climate
disasters.
We’ll talk about what the way forward to a Greener and fairer Europe can
look like and how you can get engaged in the climate fights of our time.
In the first episode, Sarah Diedro is in conversation with Green MEP Kim
van Sparrentak, who is assessing the European Commission’s new
legislative proposal to improve the working conditions of people working
through digital labour platforms.
In the second part, Digital Worker Rights Activist James Farrar, describes
his experience as an Uber driver and how to build worker power to take on
big digital platforms.
You can listen to the episodes wherever you get your podcasts or directly
on the project website (Listen on Apple Podcasts [6], Spotify [7], Google
Podcasts [8]).

The Czech Greens held their online congress
The Czech Greens hosted their congress at the end of January weekend. Our
co-chair Thomas Waitz was there to represent the European Greens family.
Congratulations to our Committee member Michal Berg and to Magdalena Davis,
who were re-elected as co-chairs of the party, and to the newly elected
board! We wish them the best of luck for the next two years, especially for
their upcoming municipal elections and Senate elections in October 2022.
At the congress, the Greens also elected a new Bureau and called on the
government to address energy prices, in particular by accelerating the
transformation of the energy sector and reducing dependence on gas. They
also rejected the government's populist proposal to increase the speed
limit on motorways for safety and environmental reasons.

Reinhard Bütikofer leads charge against Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics
‘sports-washing’
Reinhard Bütikofer, Greens/EFA MEP and Chair of the European Parliament's
China Delegation, is leading a campaign calling "for government officials
and diplomats to decline invitations to the Beijing 2022 Winter Games."
Last July, the European Parliament had already urged the EU to boycott the
event unless China improves the human rights situation in Hong Kong and the
Xinjiang province.
Our committee members Mar Garcia, the Secretary-General of the European
Greens, and Evelyne Huytebroek, Co-Chair of the European Greens, as well as
other Green politicians are supporting the boycott of China's Winter
Olympics.

Film screening: the Green Screen

The Green Screen: stream ‘Woman' for free
Between February 16-17, you can watch the documentary ‘Woman' by Yann
Arthus-Bertrand and Anasatasia Mikova for free as part of our The Green
Screen project.
Woman is a worldwide project giving a voice to 2,000 women across 50
different countries. Despite its very large scale, the film offers an
intimate portrait of those who constitute half of humanity.
Following the screening of the documentary ‘Woman’, we will host a
debate on Thursday 17 February at 19:30 CET. We will discuss the progress
that has been made concerning women’s rights, its impact on women and
girls today, and the challenges we have yet to face. How has the pandemic
re-shaped our understanding of gender equity? And how can a Green Recovery
advance women’s rights and opportunities?

Stop empty flights!
As the climate crisis unfolds, there are reports of empty planes flying
from one EU airport to another to keep airlines’ take-off and landing
rights. Major airlines - such as Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa - claim
that they will fly thousands of empty planes this year, while Greenpeace
estimates that the total number could be as high as 100 000 empty flights
this winter. These ghost flights are a disaster for the planet and
completely unnecessary!
We demand that the European Union and its member states:
* Take swift measures to bring the number of empty passenger flights down
to zero
* Put in place a system of allocating airport slots that prioritises the
lowest climate impact and other environmental factors
* Increase their efforts to switch from short-haul flights within Europe
to rail travel
