Read the Electoral Committee's statement on Phase 3 Endorsements

As your newly elected Electoral Committee for 2022-23 gets acclimated, we’d like to take a moment to share the accomplishments of our campaign working groups so far. The working group from Phase 1 of our electoral endorsements, Hugo Soto-Martinez for CD13 has turned out over 40 members to its first DSA-LA led canvass and has a handful of members organizing turnout to even more canvasses. Our Phase 2 endorsements have seen the creation of the Eunisses Hernandez for CD 1 and Fatima Iqbal-Zubair for State Assembly working groups, now up and running, ready to turn out our members to canvasses and campaign work. These accomplishments are driven by our members and it is up to our membership to continue to drive members to canvasses, phone banks, and other working group projects to achieve the wins of our endorsed candidates.

We (still) want to hear from you -- Fill out the new and improved member survey today!

We want to learn as much as possible about the people who make up DSA-LA. This information will help us gather crucial feedback, connect chapter organizers with members who have skills and resources to share, and gain a better understanding of the demographics of our membership base. It should take around 5 minutes to complete.

CALENDAR

The following list is only a highlight of what's happening this week with DSA-LA. Please check out our online calendar for full list of committee meetings & chapter events! Be sure to also follow our Instagram & Twitter for real-time announcements and calls-to-action!

Eunisses Working Group Meeting

Tuesday, February 15 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join the Eunisses Hernandez Campaign Working Group for our first official meeting! We’ll discuss the first steps toward getting Eunisses elected, talk about opportunities to get involved, and shape DSA’s vision for this campaign.

Follow the button below to RSVP, and we’ll send you the Zoom link and any other pertinent information. We’re excited to see you there!

The Immigration Justice Committee February Meeting!

Tuesday, February 15 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Look, uh, none of us in DSA (or at least most of us) thought Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Ali Mayorkas were exactly going to be moral exemplars when it came to immigration, but whew, even the most cynical socialist among us is like, “Somehow they managed to dig a tunnel under my lowest expectations.”

But as always there are things we can do! And this month, we’re going to meet IN PERSON again at the Highland Park Brewery in Chinatown (1220 N. Spring St., Los Angeles)*. Have a drink and some tater tots as we discuss the PolEd projects and organizing we’re planning to engage in this year!

*There’s free street parking nearby and we will be in the outdoor patio area. Proof of vaccination is required of all guests 12 and over for entry into the brewery.

Mutual Aid Free Brake Light Clinic Planning Meeting

Wednesday, February 16 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Come join us as we discuss and plan our next clinics for 2022, including a tentatively planned clinic in the Claremont area on Saturday March 5th! At Free Brake Light Repair Clinics, we provide brake light replacement to anyone who needs it, free of charge, as many often don’t have access to the time, resources, or knowledge to replace their brake lights, and unfortunately broken tail lights are frequently used by the cops as a pretext to pull folks over and force them into the carceral system.

Canvass for Rent Control in Pasadena

Saturday, February 19 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

DSA's Housing and Homelessness Committee is teaming up with the Pasadena Tenant Justice Coalition to collect signatures for rent control in Pasadena! The campaign has 5 weeks left to collect signatures and so we need all hands on deck. Join us at 10am on February 19 at Jefferson Park: 1501 E Villa St, Pasadena, CA 91106.

Coffee with CRT // Tomar Un Café Con CRT

Saturday, February 19 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

COFFEE WITH CRT

Join members of DSA-LA’s conflict resolution team (CRT) to learn about: who we are, what we do and don’t do, and our biggest challenges and joys from doing this work. For those who joined last time, feel free to join in the 2nd half around 10:40 am as this is also a space for giving CRT feedback, brainstorming for collaboration efforts, and questions and answers. The objectives of Coffee with CRT are to de-mystify CRT and to engage in dialogue around conflict resolution tools and experiences. This is a recurring event that happens every three months. This event will be held in English and if you would like to request ASL interpretation or Spanish interpretation, please email [email protected] at least seven days in advance. Thanks and hope to see you there!

The CRT has also developed a questionnaire to help understand the needs of POC members, better handle conflicts and grievances, and plan events to improve Chapter culture and relationships. Click here for the questionnaire (to be filled out by POC members only).

Westwood & West LA Neighborhood Meeting

Saturday, February 19 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Neighborhood Meetings are a structured place for comrades to engage in socialist political education and tangibly contribute to our chapter’s priority campaigns in their own geographies.

This Westwood/West LA area meeting will include coffee + donuts, political discussion, and campaign work aligned with the chapter’s Childcare for All campaign—including mapping our neighborhood together. The meeting will also include a follow-up discussion about how we can continue our strike solidarity work with the organized working class in our neighborhood.

To ground our discussion on Childcare for All as a socialist demand, comrades are encouraged to read this short article: CHILD CARE: THE RADICAL IS POPULAR.

Note that this and all other West LA & Westwood Neighborhood Meetings are open to new and long-time comrades who live in Westwood and the greater West LA area, including: Sawtelle, Century City, Bel-Air, and Brentwood.

Palms & Culver City Neighborhood Meeting

Sunday, February 20 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Neighborhood Meetings are a structured place for comrades to engage in socialist political education and tangibly contribute to our chapter’s priority campaigns in their own geographies.

This Palms/Culver City area meeting will include coffee, political discussion, and campaign work aligned with the chapter’s Childcare for All campaign—including on-the-ground mapping in our neighborhood.

To ground our discussion on Childcare for All as a socialist demand, comrades are encouraged to read this short summary of Nancy Fraser’s book “Fortunes of Feminism: From State-Managed Capitalism to Neoliberal Crisis”.
