Hi John,
Four years ago today, 17 families in Parkland woke up on Valentine’s Day not knowing that their entire lives would be altered forever. On that tragic day, a former student, armed with an assault rifle and 300 rounds of ammunition, killed 17 students and staff and wounded 17 others in just a matter of minutes at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Every day, an average of 123 other families across the country wake up not knowing that it will be the day that gun violence takes the life of someone they love.

In the aftermath of Parkland, students stood up to demand change. Today, the Alliance team continued in that spirit by calling on legislators to pass commonsense gun violence prevention laws now. We were joined by:
* Robert Schentrup, Brother of Carmen Schentrup, victim of the Parkland shooting;
* DeVitta Briscoe, Seattle gun violence prevention liaison;
* Deshaun Nabors, Community Passageways Community Ambassador; and
* Emily Cantrell, Survivor of the Las Vegas shooting.
Against the backdrop of 123 valentines, marked with 123 names of lives stolen by gun violence, we made clear that we cannot wait for action on gun violence. Last week, the House voted to close the ghost guns loophole, and the Senate voted to restrict high-capacity magazines, like the ones used in Parkland. As we gathered, the House also voted to restrict weapons at school board and other governing body meetings.
This is incredible progress, and we could not have come this far without your support. We still have a long way to go, but we are hopeful we are going to finish the job. Thanks for sticking with us.
–Renee and the whole Alliance team
