John,

In the 15 years that I’ve walked the halls of Congress representing Georgia, I’ve worked with many talented people who are passionate about public service. Many are young people who forgo larger salaries in the private sector because they believe in the work that we do here.

Recently, there has been increasingly frequent calls for unionization among congressional staffers. I’ll be clear on where I stand — all workers should have a right to bargain collectively, including by union representation.

The middle class was built on strong unions that secured safe working conditions and fair wages for workers. Many people forget that unions are the reason we have the weekends off and a 40-hour work week.

Republicans have been chipping away at the rights of unions, and that’s caused union membership in America to decline. It’s no coincidence that as union membership has dropped, income inequality has grown.

Thank you,
Hank Johnson (he/him)
