Dear NRDC Activist,

President Biden has directed the federal government to transition to 100% zero-emissions vehicles by 2035.

But the head of the United States Postal Service (USPS) — appointed under former President Trump — has a different idea.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has finalized a terrible plan for the USPS to spend up to $11.3 billion to purchase a new fleet of almost entirely antiquated, gas-guzzling, climate-busting delivery trucks.

These trucks will be on the road for decades, spewing out carbon pollution and pushing us closer to the brink of climate catastrophe — and flouting the deadline President Biden set for reaching net-zero emissions.

We can't let this proposal move forward.

Please submit an urgent letter imploring the USPS Board of Governors to direct the USPS to change course and do its part to fight the climate crisis by transitioning to a new fleet of 100% zero-emissions electric vehicles (EVs).

USPS operates THE largest fleet of government vehicles in the country, with nearly 250,000 trucks in service — most of which are aging, antiquated, polluting gas-guzzlers. The new USPS fleet would use almost 110 million gallons of gas per year and average less than 9 miles per gallon.

If their plan moves forward, these already-antiquated new vehicles would release billions of pounds of greenhouse gases over their lifetime, and worsen air pollution in communities already burdened by dirty air.

Switching to EVs could allow USPS vehicles to get the equivalent of over 100 miles per gallon. One study found that the USPS would save over $4 billion in potential fuel and maintenance savings from electric vehicles — a fact not lost on the rest of the delivery industry. Amazon, UPS, FedEx, and DHL have all made significant investments and commitments to electrify their fleets.

DeJoy's awful plan comes despite overwhelming opposition from President Biden, the EPA, and thousands of NRDC supporters like you who have been pushing the USPS to go electric.

Furthermore, the plan relies on a shoddy environmental impact statement (EIS) that utilized faulty data, inaccurate projections, and flawed science.

Act Now: Submit an urgent letter imploring USPS to roll back this destructive plan and join the fight against climate change by transitioning to 100% EVs.

With the climate crisis raging, the USPS needs to invest in proven EV technologies that will save money in the long run, reduce air pollution, protect public health, and be part of the climate change solution.
