Dear Friend,
One of the greatest pleasures of my writing career has been exchanging stories with fellow authors, with journalists, editors, translators, poets, and university professors. In recent years, those stories too often include accounts of creative expression being threatened or squelched: children’s authors whose books have been challenged; professors and students on college campuses being denied academic freedom; journalists who have been punished, or harried online, for reporting facts.
At times, free expression and a free press can seem like insurmountable rights to defend—threatened from all sides at home; muted and stymied abroad. This is why I support PEN America.
