John, some bills in Harrisburg just won’t die, even though they have minimal support from legislators of both parties. House Bill 38, a poorly written, proposed constitutional amendment known as the “Judicial Gerrymandering Bill,” is the bill that won’t die.
Republicans are trying to create district lines for appellate court judges that would be created by the same Republicans who have drawn partisan district maps for decades in PA. This is a blatant power grab. The GOP-led legislature is attempting to revive this awful proposal after it has been stagnant since January 2021. H.B. 38 only needs to be passed one more time in the current legislative session by the House and Senate, by a simple majority, for it to be presented as a referendum question on the next ballot. Governor Wolf does not have the power to veto this bill, and Pennsylvanians would have no recourse if it’s successfully voted on by a small number of voters who cast their ballots in primary elections.
These power-hungry Republicans in the state legislature don’t represent Pennsylvania. We do. And when our collective voice is heard, proposals to forever change the PA Constitution, like judicial gerrymandering, won’t see the light of day.
