Announcing the 2021 Congressional App Challenge Winner for Louisiana's First Congressional District
Congratulations to Vaishnavi Kumbala from Haynes Academy for winning the 2021 Congressional App Challenge for Louisiana’s First Congressional District! Vaishnavi’s app, known as "Saplings," provides users with engaging resources to reduce stress and better manage anxiety in their lives.
As a former computer programmer, I am always excited to see students taking an interest in the applied sciences and exploring new ways to allow technology to make our everyday lives easier.
I applaud Vaishnavi for her creativity and hard work in developing this app and commend Haynes Academy for encouraging students to study computer science and engage in technological education.
Meeting With the Greater Lafourche Port Commission
I recently met with the Board of Commissioners of the Greater Lafourche Port Commission to discuss Hurricane Ida recovery efforts and priorities for Port Fourchon. Port Fourchon suffered a direct hit from Hurricane Ida but — thanks to the hard work and dedication of the port and local officials — managed to restore operations to full capacity within a matter of months.
We also talked about future offshore wind development in the Gulf of Mexico, discussing its potential to create thousands of jobs in the region and generate millions of new dollars annually for coastal restoration and hurricane protection.
Visiting With Brother Martin High School Students
I had a great time meeting with a group of Brother Martin High School students who visited Washington recently as part of their school's participation in the "Close Up" program. The program gives high school students from around the nation the opportunity to discuss current events with key policymakers in our nation's capital and engage in the legislative process while debating issues in a mock Congress.
It was encouraging to hear from the students about their passion for public service and discuss important issues facing Southeast Louisiana, like hurricane protection and coastal restoration efforts. Geaux Crusaders!
