I recently spent the afternoon knocking doors in La Presa, one of the colonias in our district. Colonias are unincorporated communities along the border that tend to be low-income and lack many basic resources.

Like many colonias, residents in La Presa lack access to water and paved roads. It’s one of the many communities in our district that needs real investment in infrastructure.

I support the Green New Deal because I know we must make critical infrastructure investments and do it in a sustainable way to help the people and the planet. Nowhere is this more evident than in La Presa.

The community members I spoke to were all-in. Above all, they appreciated that somebody showed up to hear them and see them.

They call themselves “la colonia olvidada,” the forgotten colony. According to residents of La Presa, no candidate for Congress has shown up here in 20 years.

We’ve already changed that — and I promise that I’ll fight for them and all working people in Congress.

This kind of organizing — showing up in places that Washington politicians never think about, let alone visit — is critical to our strategy. And this is just the start.
