Tomorrow marks the anniversary of a dark day in our nation’s history.

But unfortunately, it is one of too many.

The violence at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida touched countless lives and inspired a generation of activists. But it should have never happened.

American students have lived under the threat of gun violence for decades — practicing active shooter drills from the time they’re learning their ABCs. We should have changed after Columbine. After Virginia Tech. After Sandy Hook.

They didn’t — and four years ago in Florida, 14 students and three staff members lost their lives.

Our peer nations don’t experience the tragedy of mass shootings like the United States, John. Our laws don’t do enough to protect children in schools, worshippers in church, and shoppers in the mall.

I’ve spent my tenure as governor fighting to protect North Carolinians from radical right-wing policies that would enable more bad actors to get their hands on guns, but we need more. It’s long past time for commonsense gun violence prevention at the federal level and in our state legislature.
