We all know that electric vehicles are a key component to reaching our nation’s carbon emissions goals. But the USPS’ shortsighted decisions around this next generation of delivery vehicles could completely undermine these objectives.

John, we’ve told you before how the United States Postal Service is actively undermining the Biden administration’s net-zero emissions goal for all federal operations by 2050. But now, SEEC members are stepping up and putting pressure on Trump-appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to do better for the climate.

The USPS has plans to buy 50,000 to 165,000 new delivery vehicles over the next ten years. But the USPS indicated last Sunday that they’re sticking to their plans for up to 90% of this fleet to run on traditional fossil fuel engines.

We all know that electric vehicles are a key component to reaching our nation’s carbon emissions goals. But the USPS’ shortsighted decisions around this next generation of delivery vehicles could completely undermine these objectives.

That’s why SEEC members sent a letter to the Postal Service this week urging them to make a larger commitment to reducing carbon emissions. In the letter, SEEC members called out the USPS’ failure to “abide properly by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements” and how its new, almost exclusively fossil-fuel-powered fleet goes against “commitments the United States has made to address the climate crisis and counters the long-term economic interests of your own agency.”

Any fossil-fuel-powered vehicles purchased now could “lock-in emissions potentially past 2050.”  We must continue the transition to zero-emission vehicles that will clean up our air and help protect us from the climate crisis at every opportunity available.

SEEC Members understand what’s at stake during these delicate times, which is why they’re taking action to not lose this opportunity for an electric vehicle future for the USPS. Chip in to support our SEEC members, who will keep fighting to ensure the needed transition to zero-emission vehicles isn’t stalled by Trump administration holdovers.

Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
