A new Republican-backed law, SB 1, in Texas is forcing local officials to reject hundreds of vote-by-mail applications because of confusion over strict ID requirements.
New obstacles for voters are just the Republican state legislature’s attempt to suppress the vote and cling to power.
SB 1 requires that people provide either their Social Security number or driver's license number with their mail-in ballot applications — and that number must match what’s on their voter registration.
However, many people don't remember what form of ID they used on their registration as many people would have registered to vote years or even decades ago.
Other provisions in the new law prevent people from talking to voters about mail in ballots altogether in some instances.
To stop these cruel voter suppression measures and protect our democracy, we have to elect more progressive champions like Jessica Cisneros who will defend our right to vote.
