Dear Friend,

The Secular Coalition for America is comprised of 20 ([link removed]) different organizations. Each organization is a unique and integral part of the larger American secular community and SCA is proud to work with them to advocate on their behalf here in our nation's capital. We would like to share with you what some of these organizations are up to!

Big news for Humanist Action: Ghana!

Humanist Action: Ghana ([link removed]) (HA Ghana) is Foundation Beyond Belief's women's rights and poverty alleviation program. Now it's becoming an independent NGO, run entirely by local Ghanaians! This is an exciting development and we wanted to share how you can learn more and support this organization.

HA Ghana focuses on protecting human rights by championing the skills necessary for Ghanaians in impoverished communities to meet their basic needs. HA Ghana does this by collaborating with local organizations and individuals to empower members of the community to build a life of self-sustainability and dignity. Each vocational or agricultural training project coordinated by HA Ghana is specifically tailored to the needs and desires identified by the communities themselves. After each training, trainees are provided with the tools and equipment needed to start a viable business in their field.

Yvonne Nyahe—head of HA Ghana—works with women so they can become financially stable and self-sufficient, avoiding outcomes like sex work and forced marriage. Now she’s shifting her focus to help women near Ghana’s infamous camps for alleged witches. If you visit the Northern Region of Ghana, you’ll see numerous elderly and vulnerable women exposed to violations of their human rights. Many suffer brutality and stigmatization when they are accused of causing supernatural harm. This Sunday 2/13 at 8:00 AM PST, Yvonne will share her vision, personal journey, and experiences with witchcraft accusations. RSVP at this link. ([link removed])

It's part of a Black History Month virtual speaker series organized by Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. We’d like you to hear from Yvonne and learn what we can do to help women in Northern Ghana thrive.

NEW: A major report on Christian nationalism and the January 6 Insurrection

Two of the nation’s leading advocacy groups have issued a blockbuster report delineating the role Christian nationalism played in last year’s assault on the Capitol.

The Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty (BJC) and the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) ([link removed]) have just released the hard-hitting exposé, “Christian Nationalism and the January 6, 2021, Insurrection.” BJC also leads the Christians Against Christian Nationalism initiative.

The report includes contributions from prominent experts on Christian nationalism, including Professors Andrew Whitehead and Samuel Perry, authors of Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States; Katherine Stewart, author of The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism; Dr. Jemar Tisby, historian of race and religion and author of How to Fight Racism and The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism; Amanda Tyler, executive director of BJC and organizer of the Christians Against Christian Nationalism initiative; and Andrew L. Seidel, a constitutional attorney at FFRF and author of The Founding Myth: Why Christian Nationalism is Un-American.

With its razor-sharp focus on an underreported aspect of the Jan. 6 assault, the report — combining the resources of two notable groups and with insights from prominent experts — deserves to be widely read.

How Is Social Justice Related To Humanism?

The Secular Student Alliance ([link removed]) will be hosting a webinar on Tuesday, February 22 at 7pm ET (4pm PT) with Nadya Dutchin, the new executive director of the American Humanist Association ([link removed]) , as she details the relationship between humanism and social justice. Building on the rich legacy of the humanist movement, we ensure the next generation of humanists have a powerful, active network that demands progressive policies to ensure that safety, dignity, justice, equality, and agency are equally accessible to all people.

Always great to see SCA member organizations in collaboration with each other!
