John,

One week from today, Texas will execute Rodney Reed — unless we stop it.

Rodney Reed, a Black man from Bastrop County, Texas, was convicted of the 1996 rape and murder of Stacey Stites, a white woman, but another man likely committed the crime. After Reed was locked up, witnesses came forward to say that Reed and Stites were in a secret romantic relationship. Stites’ fiancé, Jimmy Fennell, had both motive and opportunity, and was later jailed for other sex assault crimes. But because of a flawed trial—untested DNA evidence, key witnesses never interviewed, and a lead investigator who was friends with Fennell—justice has never been served.

This weekend, I was joined by thousands of people who demanded that justice be served for Rodney. We were joined by national and local figures, death row exonerees, and every day folks who will not stand for this miscarraige of justice.

Rodney Reed’s case is a throwback to Jim Crow Texas. Stites and Reed kept their relationship secret because they were in rural Bastrop and interracial relationships were forbidden. Reed was convicted by an all-white jury, after the prosecutor suppressed key evidence and painted a racist caricature of Reed as a violent man.

We cannot allow this Jim Crow injustice to continue. I am doing everything I can to stop the execution of Rodney Reed. I need you to join me and get involved:

Rodney Reed needs our voice. Bastrop County is right here in the Texas 10th. Help us show the world that a different Texas is possible, and let’s do everything we can to save this man’s life.

For justice,
Mike Siegel
